Allendale is in the North Pennines, officially designated an Area of Outstanding Beauty and UNESCO European and Global Geopark
It's a wonderful mix of moor and dale. You can cycle or walk for mile upon mile and see more wildlife than human inhabitants. Wild life that includes such rarities as the red squirrel, peregrine falcon, goshawk, mountain saxifrage and orchids.
Its fascinating mining and industrial history is much in evidence throughout the countryside.
This chimney is a 40 minutes walk from the cottage. The covered in flue leads up to the chimney from the site of the old lead smelter, just across the bridge where now you will find the Allendale Brewery!
